Opening of Gundua Secondary School
Nov 9, 2009

On 12 November, Crown Princess Victoria, protector of the Gundua Foundation, will open Gundua Secondary School in Ex-Lewa, Kenya. The opening ceremony will also be attended by the Swedish Ambassador of Kenya, Ann Dismorr. Representing Intellecta on the journey to Kenya and also responsible for the event will be Richard Ohlson (Chairman of the Foundation), Lars Peder Hedberg (Member of the Board) and Johan Bååthe (project manager).

“Seeing how the project has grown over these two years has been fantastic, especially now that we are on the threshold of the concrete results that our joint efforts and considerable commitment have helped to create,” says Richard Ohlson. “We now aim to continue with the development of the day school at Ex-Lewa and thus create a school that can be a role model for additional similar projects in various parts of Kenya, as well as in Africa and other parts of the world.”

Now that the day school is ready, it will have the capacity to admit up to 320 pupils, who will be given an opportunity to receive education at a low fee. In addition to class rooms, the school buildings contain a laboratory, a refectory, toilets and a library. Teaching will be characterised by modern teaching methods, with the aim that the pupils’ knowledge will be of benefit to the neighbouring area.

Vittra performs Operation Day Work for Gundua
June 1, 2009

On June 1-3 the Vittra School in Sollentuna worked on a project about Kenya and the Gundua School. The theme days ended with Operation Day Work, a project where the school raises money for children in need elsewhere in the world. This year the money raised by the Vittra School will go to the Gundua Foundation and the school in Ex-Lewa. On June 1 Amanda Borg from the foundation visited the school to talk about Gundua and the work there.

The children do a number if things in order to raise money, for example by baking buns which they then sell, working at home by cleaning, or collecting money in money boxes. A boy in seventh grade wanted to raise money by baking. He was hoping that families in his neighbourhood were willing to donate money as the issue of education were close to their hearts, with children of their own. The teachers in the school also participate, organising two theme days on the subject of Kenya, focussing on the Gundua School. The theme days contain a number of activities, there are films from Africa and students are taught some Swahili, one of Africa’s biggest languages.

Gundua initiates cooperation with primary school
May 20, 2009

Right next to the Gundua Secondary School is the Ex-Lewa Primary School, a school with considerable lower standard than Gundua. Most students in the primary school will eventually move on to Gundua . That, together with the state of the Ex-Lewa School , has resulted in a cooperation between the two. A contract was recently signed which will lead to, when the appropriate permission has been granted by the authorities, the Ex-Lewa School becoming a part of Gundua. This also means that the Gundua Foundation can work in Ex-Lewa. The plan is freshen up Ex-Lewa’s buildings and equipment, thus providing the student with improved conditions. Gundua will also be sharing the canteen with Ex-Lewa, which would offer many poor children at least one meal a day.

Both head masters from the two schools are looking forward to the cooperation. They say the two schools are one in spirit and look forward to exchanging knowledge.

Auction for charity
April 01, 2008

In the beginning of February Gundua Foundation held an auction, raising funds for the building of a school in Kenya. The auction turned out to be very successful.

At the auction 70 items were sold, to a total value of just over SEK 1 million. The money will go towards building the school in Ex-Lewa, which is to be completed during 2009.

“We are very pleased with the auction and raised more money than expected,” says Jeanette Palmstierna, project manager at Gundua Foundation.

One of the guests at the auction was Kenya’s ambassador to Sweden, H.E. Mrs Purity Muhindi, who gave a captivating speech. Despite the present political turmoil in Kenya, the government is aiming to keep its promise of free education, and the Kenyan government appreciates Gundua Foundation’s initiative to build a school in Ex-Lewa. H.E. Mrs Purity Muhind also expressed her gratitude for Gundua Foundation’s commitment to the children of Kenya.
